Conference Centres of Excellence venues scoop BDRC 'VenueVerdict Gold Standard' !

One of the consortium’s newest members, Maple House in Birmingham, took the ‘No 1 Conference Centre’ title, while in total its members represented more than a quarter of only 19 venues which qualified for BDRC’s (Business Development Research Consultants) exclusive ‘VenueVerdict Gold Standard’.

The highly prized awards are the result of the continuous monitoring of customer service achievement by BDRC, the leading full service market research agency. Working primarily for service organisations, the company specialises in hospitality, finance, travel and travel tourism and leisure. The awards embrace some 200 different hotels and meeting venues, for which BDRC independently assesses customer feedback.

The BDRC ‘VenueVerdict Gold Standard’ is only given to venues which deliver the very highest levels of customer satisfaction over a period of time. The successful CCE venues, in addition to Maple House, were:

The Royal College of Physicians, Regent’s Park, London
The Cotswold Conference Centre, Broadway
Lane End Conference Centre, High Wycombe
The Moller Centre, Cambridge

“This year’s BDRC awards are an outstanding result for our group, bearing in mind the spread and quality of the different venues that are included in the study,” commented Anthony Lishman, Executive Director of Conference Centres of Excellence.

TV "dust up" for Conference Aston Birmingham !

TV “dust up” for Birmingham conference venue

New season TV schedules mean that Birmingham is going to feature on the small screen, with two drama series shot on location in the city airing this month. The BBC's Hustle and Survivors both used Birmingham locations for filming during last summer, raising interest from passers-by and curiosity from people who had their work places taken over for television.

Conference Aston was transformed for Survivors, a tale of when most of the world’s population is wiped out by a deadly virus. Marketing Manager at the venue Paul Bunce said; “The producers wanted to depict a bar that had been hurriedly evacuated, then deserted for months. They brought in some very strange props, including trays of mouldy food and dust! The effect was remarkable, even without viewing through a lens. It looked like the place hadn’t been inhabited for years.”

"They also transformed our largest conference suite into a deserted office area which was amazing to see and certainly demonstrated a brand new angle to the venue"

“There was a buzz of excitement amongst some of our staff when the TV crew were due, which has been renewed over the holidays as trailers for the programmes have been revealed.”

“We did have some worries when the producers originally approached us, with fears about disruption to our guests and reinstatement of our usual pristine look, but the whole crew were in and out with minimal fuss.”

“Cardiff seems to have been firmly imprinted on the TV map and the nation’s consciousness with programmes such as Dr Who and Torchwood. I hope that the influx of TV crews into Birmingham is going to build in the same way. I would encourage anyone asked to provide venues or locations for TV production to be encouraged by our experience and to take the opportunity to help show our region in a positive light.”

Top tips to maximise training and meeting sessions at Wyboston Lakes

Recognised as one of the UK's foremost training venues, Wyboston Lakes polled the trainers and meeting hosts using the centre between September and November.

The results reveal the top tips on how to get messages across in a short period of time whilst in learning or meeting scenarios:

Break the ice early
Know your audience as quickly as possible as you will find that there are those who will contribute and those that simply won’t.

Make sure everyone is heard
To ensure that everyone has their say during the session, make sure that those who are perceived as being quieter, get a chance to contribute. Acknowledge everybody’s contribution and use whiteboards or flipcharts to record good ideas from the group for later use.

Clarify the reason for being there
When learning a new skill, brainstorming or trying to get to grips with new procedures, clarify exactly what you are expecting from the delegates.

Stick to your guns
With everyone in agreement of what they are there for, make sure you keep on track with everyone contributing equally. Bring the conversation back on message if needs be.

Ask delegates to write ideas on cards and then put them on a board
Ask a question but give the group some time to think, then ask all the group to share their thoughts.

Build the spirit of co-creation
For immediate engagement, welcome anecdotes and examples of workplace situations. These allow the presenter to base the presentation on things common to the audience.

Let the audience interact with peers
Set aside 10 minutes for attendees to discuss the presentation’s key themes in small groups. This helps to create a stronger connection to the content and its message.

Make the most of your human capital
If you have specialists in the group, use them to help reinforce a point.

Wyboston Lakes is at the heart of the UK on the border of Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. This learning and development centre has been used by many of the UK’s FTSE 100 companies along with the public sector, associations and not-for-profit sector.

Clive Bache, sales and marketing director at Wyboston Lakes said: 'Getting the most out of meetings is paramount as budgets are tighter and return on investment has never been more important. Meeting hosts can use these broad tips to make best use of their delegates’ time’.
