Wyboston Lakes rebrands Waterfront Conference Centre

Wyboston Lakes, the UK’s largest privately owned single site specialist training and conference venue, has confirmed the rebranding of its Waterfront Conference Centre. The centre, one of three separate venues on its 350 acre site, is now called the ‘Conference Suites at Wyboston Lakes Hotel’, a name that demonstrates the availability to organisers of a number of additional opportunities to enhance their events.

The move results from extensive investment over recent years in the residential and leisure facilities at the Waterfront Centre - and in adjacent areas of the Wyboston Lakes site - which has generated a positive response from conference clients and has also enabled Wyboston Lakes to offer a hotel facility for non-conference clients.

The Conference Suites will continue to be a distinct and separate operation on the site. They offer a total of 28 air-conditioned meeting and syndicate rooms with a capacity for up to 130 delegates in the largest room, with integrated audio-visual equipment, on-site technical support and site-wide internet access. Wyboston Lakes’ other distinct centres, the Robinson Executive Conference Centre and the Willows Training Centre, retain their identities.

The decision reflects Wyboston Lakes’ recognition of the business potential of developing corporate accommodation and leisure options on the Waterfront site, which is picturesquely situated on the banks of a large lake. Located just by the A1 between Cambridge and Bedford, Wyboston Lakes is in a convenient position for many business and leisure travellers, while its attractive rural location has also made it popular as a venue for private events such as dining, parties, weddings and sporting activities.

There has therefore been progressive investment in facilities for people staying overnight for business or leisure, for those visiting for a few hours to dine or relax, or looking for a weekend leisure break. Most recently, more than £700,000 has been invested in widening the range of dining options on the Waterfront site: those options now include the prestigious Waterfront Restaurant, which recently achieved an AA Rosette, and new bar and lounge facilities. An 18 hole golf course and a fitness centre are also available on the site.

The company is communicating the change of identity to existing and potential conference clients and is confident that it will help open up areas of new business. 'Of course the Waterfront Conference Centre has been a very prominent name in the sector, but its customer base is very strong and we do not anticipate that the change of identity will affect its status and popularity,' said Clive Bache, Wyboston Lakes’ sales & marketing director: 'However, for the ‘conference centre’ terminology had become unrepresentative of a site that offers an even more rounded proposition, and in turn enhances still further the scope we offer to organisers.'

The rebranding decision does not mean any change in Wyboston Lakes’ determination to offer clients the many benefits of dedicated conference and training facilities. 'We believe we are one of the sector’s flagships for the advantages of focused facilities, and each of our centres will continue to offer those advantages,' added Clive Bache.

Warwick waiter wins gold for 2nd year running ...!

Ramkumar Govindaswamy, a trainee manager at the University of Warwick’s award winning Warwick Conferences operation, has been served a second helping of awards success.

Ramkumar, from Leamington Spa, won gold for the second year running in the 18th annual TUCO (The University Caterers' Organisation) Chefs and Food Service Skills Challenge on Tuesday March 29th.

The competition is a grueling challenge designed to put food service staff through their paces and showcase their skills, abilities and imagination to provide a first class dining experience.

The competition is split into two parts: the preparation, where finalists are asked to design a menu card for lunch, and a live final. During the live element, Ramkumar was required to lay-out, serve and clear a three course meal with wine and coffee for four people.

Ramkumar said: “Like last year, the standard of my competitors was incredible, so winning the award again is an amazing feeling. Dining is not just about the food, but creating an ambience that ensures the customer enjoys every aspect of their visit.

Julie Taylor, events and operations manager, said: “Ramkumar’s attention to detail, calmness under pressure and fantastic skills in restaurant service are a credit to Warwick Conferences.
“To impress the judges in such a respected competition is no mean feat and we’re delighted he’s a part of our fabulous team.”

TUCO is the University Caterers' Organisation. The annual Food Service Skills Challenge, which this year took place in Blackpool, is open to all TUCO member Universities and Colleges and acknowledges and rewards the top service staff in the higher education sector.

Retail event is a hit with high street brands

When Mary Portas launched her Channel 4 ‘Secret Shopper’ series, she claimed that the retail industry had developed a couldn’t-care-less attitude to customer service – but representatives from some of the UK’s biggest high street names disproved that theory at a recent event.

Executive Education at Warwick Business School (WBS) joined forces with Warwick Conferences to hold a ‘Making Customer Service Excellence Happen’ seminar at Warwick Conferences’ impressive Scarman venue.

The event was designed to give people an insight into the radical business thoughts of speaker Dr David James, as well as an outline on some of the customer service expertise on offer from Executive Education.

The evening was the brainchild of Warwick Conferences Business Development Manager Chris Nagle, who was encouraged by the interest from the retail community.

He said: “The Mary Portas series really grabbed the industry’s attention and it became obvious that if we combined with Warwick Business School we could offer some real value to the sector in terms of an overview of expert thoughts as well as a great networking opportunity.

“The feedback has been fantastic and we were delighted to have so many conversations with people about coming back to hold their own events with us.”

Director of Executive Education at WBS Jan Stiles echoed that sentiment, saying that the evening had been a great success.

“There is only so much you can achieve in an hour seminar but Dr David James was very engaging and certainly struck a chord with the audience.

“He talked very insightfully about issues that every retail business is facing and that was reflective of the approach we take with our master classes on this issue.

“We also offer tailor-made courses and solutions for businesses as we understand that all the challenges are slightly different, and having heard David’s approach a lot of people were interested in talking about those.”

Dr David James engaged those present with tales of customer service heroes and villains – and revealed that he believes a lot of businesses take the wrong approach to this area.

He said: “A lot of chief executives have a mantra of ‘putting the customer at the heart of their business’ – but they don’t really mean it.

“Most chief execs spend their time looking at the way their own organisation runs internally, and not what the customer sees and thinks when they interact.

“Businesses that have real empathy with their customers are the ones that create real fans, and those fans go out and get them new customers.”

Networking at the event were representatives from brands such as Tesco, Carphone Warehouse, Cooperative Pharmacies, Signet and Schuh – with those present pleased with the opportunities it presented.

Caroline Edwards of Carphone Warehouse said: “The networking was a key part of the experience for me and it was very interesting to take the opportunity to talk with like-minded people.

“It also gave me the opportunity to see the fantastic facilities on offer from Warwick Conferences and we will certainly be returning'.

Thrilled staff at the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre are celebrating after taking the title of Conference Hotel of the Year 2011.

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre took the prestigious title at the eighth annual Scottish Hotel Awards. The winners are chosen following inspections, interviews, consumer feedback and nominations, industry intelligence and critic analysis.

On receiving the award, Bronagh Bell, Business Development Director at the Clydebank venue, said: “I am delighted that the Beardmore has been named Conference Hotel of the Year 2011.

Flexibility is the key as Conference Aston welcomes the Co-Op

Birmingham’s leading management training centre has received the stamp of approval from the UK’s 5th largest food retailer The Co-operative Food, after hosting its annual HR conference.

The team at Conference Aston welcomed more than 170 delegates from across the UK to the conference, which took place over two days in January.

It was a key event for The Co-operative Food HR team and proved to be the best conference they had ever hosted, according to Head of HR Change and Programme Management Steve Walker.

“The conference is an essential part of our HR communications calendar as it is one of the few times in the year we can bring all our HR colleagues together, who collectively provide a comprehensive HR service to over 80,000 colleagues in our 3,000 stores,” he said.

“It’s a time to communicate our Vision for the future, share best practice and to network and with such a packed schedule of seminars, break out groups and meetings it is essential everything runs smoothly.

“I can’t praise the team at Conference Aston enough for the level of service they provided from the very first contact we had with them.

“Throughout the planning stages they were flexible and proactively made suggestions which helped the event run well and to budget.

“When we arrived for the event the general manager immediately instilled us with a sense of confidence and this followed through the whole conference, which ran like clockwork.
“Whatever we required, from changes in syndicate rooms and photo copying to a lunch for managers at the last minute, the team were available and on hand to make it happen.

“It was a great conference for us in terms of the outcomes, which saw 97 per cent of delegates ready to embrace our vision for 2012.

“But it was also a great event from a venue perspective, with nearly 70 per cent of delegates rated the conference facilities as great with a further 65 per cent rating the hotel equally highly.”

The two day event encompassed a seminar programme with breakout sessions as well as evening entertainment, which was hosted onsite in the restaurant and at the Lakeside Centre.

Conference Aston head of sales and marketing Christine Page said the event was one of a number the venue had hosted for HR professionals and for national high street retailers.
“We are seeing a substantial increase in big brands who are looking for a centrally located conference and training centre, with flexible facilities and most importantly a responsive team,” she said.

“Conference Aston is uniquely positioned to be adaptable and to understand the needs of clients from the outset.
“This fantastic feedback clearly demonstrates that and is a tribute to the entire staff who worked so hard to make the event a success.”

Conference Aston welcomes more than 54,000 people a year to Birmingham for training, residential conferences, for weddings and to stay in its high quality hotel facilities and on site campus accommodation.

It sits at the heart of Aston University, which is a long established research-led university known for its world-class teaching quality and strong links to industry, government and commerce.

Glasgow Venue First in Scotland to Achieve MIA Gold Accreditation

All three IET Venues across UK achieve Gold AIM Higher status

London, 23 March 2011: IET Venues, the premier family of venues across the UK, today announces that all three of its venues in the UK have achieved Gold AIM Higher Accreditation from the Meetings Industry Association (MIA), with IET Glasgow: Teacher Building becoming the first venue in Scotland to achieve the accolade.

With value for money and diversity of services now increasingly important in the events industry, IET Venues has continued to adapt to customer needs to provide the best and most bespoke service possible. The MIA has recognised this by awarding the IET with a string of Gold awards. IET Birmingham: Austin Court has become the first venue in Birmingham to receive a Gold award from the MIA and IET London: Savoy Place has also achieved the Gold standard.

Jane Longhurst, Chief Executive, Meetings Industry Association comments, “Achievement of three Gold awards is almost beyond excellence, it’s a huge piece of work to achieve one, so to gain three for such diverse venues is amazing. The achievement clearly demonstrates the fabulous service and facilities that organisers can expect to get from any one of these superb venues.”

The MIA Gold Standard AIM Higher Award sends a positive signal to potential clients that superior service levels have been achieved as the Gold standard requires venues to meet or exceed 50 criteria. These criteria focus on business and service planning, commitment to resources and efficiency, researching and monitoring customer needs, creating and maintaining the customer environment, and booking, pricing and payment information and procedures.

“Achieving Gold AIM Higher accreditation from the MIA is an in-depth and rigorous process and we are delighted that all three of the IET Venues have achieved this standard,” says Lucy Wright, Sales and Development Manager, IET London: Savoy Place. “The accreditation will serve as a great proof point to all prospective clients about the high level of tailored service that our venues can provide.”

A Challenging day ahead at Cotswold Conference Centre

Cotswold Conference Centre is to hold its first ever Charity Team Challenge

This year Cotswold Conference Centre is celebrating its 10th Birthday. To mark this, the company has pledged to raise £10,000 for its chosen Charity for 2011, Noah’s Ark Trust who support bereaved children and their families in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The 2011 Team Challenge, being held on the 10th of June, will attract teams from both local and national companies to compete against each other on Cotswold Conference Centre’s 300 acre Estate. The challenge will be based within the grounds of Farncombe Estate at the Cotswold Conference Centre. Each team will make a pile of virtual money by visiting control points against the clock around the 300 acre Estate. This will potentially buy them a canoe building kit and accessories at auction. The teams will then build their canoe and one member will use it to cross the lake to our island. The winning team will be the first team to ring the bell on the island.

The day will offer fun and networking combined with a teambuilding experience which is bound to change working relationships in the office forever! There is likely to be regional PR coverage from the press and local radio and, of course, it’s all in a very good cause.
