Golden Wonders again!

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre has received the ultimate Gold award for Green Tourism for a second time.

The four star residential conference venue received the Gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme for the first time in Summer 2010 and were accredited again following a visit by inspectors in July this year.

The Beardmore has an active ‘green’ team with representation from every department. The team regularly meets to discuss methods of improving its green credentials and encourage guests to ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’.

Eileen Newman, General Manager of the Beardmore, said: 'We are delighted to have received the gold award again as it shows how committed we are to helping to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment.

'As well as doing all the fundamental good sustainable practices such as recycling, watching energy consumption and encouraging guests to re-use linen and towels, we have also come up with some innovative schemes.

'Many of our most popular and fun ideas have come from the staff such as growing our own herbs to use in the Beardmore kitchen and providing complimentary bicycles for guests to borrow during their stay.'

The Beardmore's green policy also includes recycling paper, oil and cans, using products made from recycled materials, and encouraging guests to re-use towels and bed linen.

They also have a popular ‘green conference package’ to encourage conference organisers to hold sustainable events.

Ms Newman added: 'The green package encourages them to use less paper and use public transport to travel to the Beardmore. But any conference organiser or delegate can experience our clever technology like the Smart Board, the Apple iMacs and the video conferencing equipment.'

The Beardmore named Conference Hotel of the Year 2011

Thrilled staff at the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre are celebrating after taking the title of Conference Hotel of the Year 2011.

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre took the prestigious title at the eighth annual Scottish Hotel Awards. The winners are chosen following inspections, interviews, consumer feedback and nominations, industry intelligence and critic analysis.

The awards – dubbed the ‘Scottish Hotel Oscars’ – were presented on Sunday 27 March in Glasgow at a ceremony that was attended by hotel teams from across Scotland.

Glasgow Venue First in Scotland to Achieve MIA Gold Accreditation

All three IET Venues across UK achieve Gold AIM Higher status

London, 23 March 2011: IET Venues, the premier family of venues across the UK, today announces that all three of its venues in the UK have achieved Gold AIM Higher Accreditation from the Meetings Industry Association (MIA), with IET Glasgow: Teacher Building becoming the first venue in Scotland to achieve the accolade.

With value for money and diversity of services now increasingly important in the events industry, IET Venues has continued to adapt to customer needs to provide the best and most bespoke service possible. The MIA has recognised this by awarding the IET with a string of Gold awards. IET Birmingham: Austin Court has become the first venue in Birmingham to receive a Gold award from the MIA and IET London: Savoy Place has also achieved the Gold standard.

Stirling Management Centre chef wins UK Young Chef of the Year

Stirling Management Centre’s Ross McMillan has won a UK Young Chef of the Year competition, held at Ascot Racecourse. The event was organised by Sodexo, provider of on-site service solutions at Stirling Management Centre. Ross held off stiff competition from young chefs from all over the UK. He had an hour to prepare two portions of a two-course meal. Ross will now progress on to the 2011Sodexo Chef of the Year competition.

The Young Chef competition was part of a UK-wide salon culinaire, which attracted over 620 chefs, 200 more entries than last year. To qualify for Ascot, Ross won the Sodexo Scottish Junior Chef of the Year competition. Shortly before Ross’s triumph, Chef de Partie Grant Bundy won ‘best in show’ at a salon culinaire held at the Centre, where several of his colleagues also won medals.

Grant Bundy, Chef de Partie at Stirling Management Centre won best in show at a recent Salon Culinaire, held at the Centre on 6 October 2010. Thirty-two entrants from Sodexo establishments all over Scotland competed in different classes to showcase their talents. Grant, whose entry was a dessert tart, will now go to the Sodexo Awards Ceremony in London in November. Salon Culinaire tests participants expertise in preparing dishes in a range of categories.

According to Alan Tonks, Sodexo¹s event organiser, the Salon Culinaire gives aspiring chefs a chance to shine, competing against their peers, learning from one another and helping keep standards high. We look forward to our competitions attracting more entrants in future, building towards future success for Sodexo and our clients.

In its latest three-yearly Investors in People (IiP) assessment, The Beardmore, which first gained accreditation in 1996, not only confirmed its status, but attained silver for meeting additional standards. The nationally recognised standard is used by more than 4,000 organisations in Scotland. The IiP assessor was on-site for three days, speaking to a randomly selected group of staff.

Health Minister speaks at National Meeting on Antimicrobial Stewardship in Scotland at Stirling Management Centre

On 9 February 2010 the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG) hosted a national event at Stirling Management Centre to highlight current good practice and outline their future vision. The meeting aim was to share key achievements in antimicrobial stewardship with NHS board managers and clinicians. Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Minister for Health and Well-being, addressed the meeting, giving the Scottish Government view. Presentations followed by local, national and international stakeholders in this field. Professor Dilip Nathwani, Chairman of the SAPG, shared plans for future work to optimise the use of antimicrobials in all healthcare settings. Antimicrobial stewardship is a key element in managing Healthcare Associated Infection.

CCE venue The Beardmore hosts high-res fibre link for Glasgow's Jubilee Hospital

Golden Jubilee National Hospital now houses the expert cardiology services for West Scotland. Video South has installed a high resolution fibre link from the catheter labs to the on site Beardmore conference centre. The HD link will provide high quality demonstrations of interventional and EP procedures to audiences in the comfortable auditorium.

New technology & new techniques

The introduction of a world class teaching and conferencing system allowing live sound and images to be beamed direct from the hospital’s cardiac catheterisation laboratories (cath labs), meant that clinicians gathered in the auditorium of the adjoining Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre were able to watch and learn the innovative procedure.

And, due to high bandwidth fibre optic connection and live two-way audio, the remote audience could see the same high resolution imaging as those working in the lab.
