The Manor House Chef reaches final four...

The Manor House are proud to announce that Head Chef Gavin Kellett has reached the final four in the Chef of the Future Competition, which is due to take place on Wednesday 21st May 2014 in Manchester.

Run by the Vegetarian Society's Cordon Very Cookery School, the competition is in its sixth year and challenges chefs to create a wholly vegetarian three course menu. The competition is open to professional chefs and keen amateur cooks with thewinner being offered a fully funded place on the Cordon Vert Professional Diploma training week.

As a finalist Gavin will have three hours to cook a three course menu, which must serve four people and will then be presented to a panel of judges in a Master Chef style.

The Manor House prides itself on its presentation of vegetarian dishes that appear throughout their menus in order to provide a great selection and choice for both delegates and residents.

Gavin is a keen forager and his menu entry showcases new ingredients and cooking methods to give classic dishes a modern twist. The menu includes a few foraged ingredients, such as stinging nettles; which are part of the main dish! It is challenges like these that test and improve a chef's skills and helps them grow and create innovative flavour combinations and cooking methods. Gavin's full menu can be seen here and we wish him all the very best of luck.

The Manor House wins Gold... Again!

The Manor House is delighted to have started 2014 with the award of another prestigious accreditation.

The Manor House received a VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation for the first quarter of 2014 from BDRC Continental, who collect feedback to measure how likely the Manor House’s meetings customers are to recommend it. There are around 360 hotels and venues nationally who take part in the VenueVerdict scheme and of these only 29 got the net promoter score of +70 or more necessary to win the Gold Standard Accreditation. The Manor House is the only venue to achieve the award in the Surrey area.

“We're all delighted that the Manor House has received the VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation for  the first quarter of 2014” says Centre Manager Howard Canning, who also points out that this is the ninth successive quarter that the Manor House has achieved Gold Standard Accreditation. "The BDRC Continental VenueVerdict Accreditation is a fantastic endorsement for new or potential customers. Customer feedback is independently measured and verified by BDRC Continental, so the Accreditation is an indication to any meeting booker that their peers are happy to recommend the Manor House’s meetings facilities and services. Customers are assured of a great experience.”

The Manor House, the independently owned meetings venue in Godalming, Surrey has been awarded another prestigious accreditation.

The Manor House received a VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation for 2013 from BDRC Continental, who collect feedback to measure how likely the Manor House’s meetings customers are to recommend it. The Manor House is the only venue to win in the Surrey area.

“It’s great news that the Manor House has received the VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation for the second year on the trot” says Centre Manager Howard Canning, “and we feel as if gold is running through our veins these days! In October we learned we had also maintained our Green Tourism Gold Award for environmental awareness for the second time too. The BDRC Accreditation is a fantastic endorsement for new or potential customers as it’s is an indication that many others are happy to recommend the Manor House’s meetings facilities and services.”

At the Manor House, consistency is everything!

In 2012, The Manor House Conference Centre, Godalming achieved a VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation from BDRC Continental. In 2013, we maintained the same level for the first two quarters and have now followed it up with the Accreditation for the third quarter, which ended in September.

BDRC Continental collect feedback to measure how likely the Manor House’s meetings customers are to recommend it. Of the nearly 360 hotels and venues nationally who took part in the scheme in the quarter, only 33 got the net promoter score of +70 or more necessary to win the Gold Standard Accreditation. Once again, the Manor House is the only venue to gain the accreditation in Surrey.

“We're really pleased to have attained the VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation for the third quarter in a row”  says Centre Manager Howard Canning, “the pressure in now on to gain the distinction for the last quarter and for 2013 as a whole. For our meetings customers, the VenueVerdict Gold Accreditation is a tremendous indication that their colleagues and peers are happy to recommend the Manor House’s facilities and services.”

Gold, Silver and Shiny Stars at the Manor House

It’s been a summer of success at the Manor House Conference Centre in Godalming which has accumulated gold, silver and shiny stars over the summer.

At the start of the season, it achieved a VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation from BDRC Continental for the second quarter 2013, which ended in June.

BDRC Continental collect feedback to measure how likely the Manor House’s meetings customers are to recommend it. Of the nearly 375 hotels and venues nationally who took part in the scheme in the quarter, only 33 got the net promoter score of +70 or more necessary to win the Gold Standard Accreditation. The Manor House is the only venue to gain the accreditation in the Surrey area.

In July, following an unannounced inspection from officers of Waverley Borough Council's Environmental Health Department, The Manor House’s five star food hygiene rating was re-confirmed.

The inspectors checked all aspects of the food production process from the delivery of raw ingredients to the time it is served to customers, giving it a big thumbs up. The official score will be recorded as part of Scores on the Doors, the national scheme that allows diners to see the ratings of every establishment that makes and sells food in the UK.

In August, the Manor House learned that it had retained its VisitEngland 4 star Guest Accommodation rating and Silver Award for quality. “This was really the icing on the cake,” remarks Centre Manager Howard Canning “as we had no inkling that a rating visit was due.”

“It’s been a great summer. We had our busiest month ever in July and we’ve accumulated all these plaudits as well!”  says Canning, who is also waiting to learn whether the Manor House will be shortlisted in the Beautiful South awards, run by Tourism South East. “For those staying, the 4 star Guest Accommodation rating is a real indication of quality and hospitality” he continues. “For diners, 5 star food hygiene means knowing that their meal has been safely produced, whilst the Gold Standard Accreditation is an indication that many others are happy to recommend the Manor House’s meetings facilities and services.”

The Manor House - Who do you think we are?

We may share our name with other hotels in the Guildford area, but that is where the similarity ends. We’re a unique venue and the only place to hold your meetings or accommodate your guests.

The Manor House is an independently-owned conference centre and hotel in Godalming. There are 10 meeting rooms and 31 bedrooms set in suburban countryside, surrounded by so much peace and tranquillity that you can leave the windows open all day and hear calming bird song, breathe in the fresh air and view an amazing panorama of the Surrey Hills.

Godalming? Now there’s a place that may not come straight to mind, but it’s had its moments!  It was the first town in Britain to have electric street lighting and was home to Jack Phillips, the heroic wireless operator on the ill-fated Titanic. Charterhouse School, the public school famous for producing politicians and diplomats, is just across the road.

Location is often cited as the key factor in selecting a venue for a meeting, so let’s see what we can do to help you picture exactly where Godalming is. Like those Charterhouse politicians and diplomats, it’s gloriously well connected.

Godalming is mid-way between London & Portsmouth, six miles from Guildford, Surrey’s County Town. The A3, linking London to the south coast, runs a couple of miles from our door, putting Godalming and the Manor House within an hour’s drive of the centre of London. The M25 is twelve miles away and from there, you can be on the M4 heading west to Wales or the M40 to the Midlands within an hour.

If you’re travelling by train, Godalming is on the main London to Waterloo route and there are at least two trains an hour during peak times. The journey takes about 50 minutes and you can alight at either Godalming or Farncombe, both of which are about a mile from the Manor House. Taxis are plentiful or we can supply you with walking directions if you fancy the stroll (uphill!)

For those travelling from further afield, Heathrow and Gatwick Airports both lie about 30 miles away and can be reached within 40 minutes. We are happy to organise a taxi pick up or a chauffeur service to the Manor House.

The Manor House really does offer a great location, whichever way your guests travel, whilst its unique situation in peaceful surroundings overlooking the Surrey Hills makes it worth serious consideration for your next meeting.

Conference Centres of Excellence Editors Lunch

Conference Centres of Excellence hosted a lunch for Editors recently at the award winning member venue The Manor House, Godalming.

General Managers from Conference Centres of Excellence member venues met with industry editors to have a ‘round-table’ symposium about specialist venues and the future for conference and training business.

In particular, discussions arose over demands by companies to change the way people learn, and how training venues are adapting to meet the needs of customers. Mark Jones, Managing Director of Wyboston Lakes outlined how significant investment in technology has opened up options for hybrid events, although the face-to-face element still remains paramount.

But despite all the hype around new technology and blended learning ultimately the group agreed that ‘Successful meetings make money’. People who are working away from the office find it beneficial to meet face to face, and in fact meetings are not a drain on resources but quite the opposite.  With more and more people working from home, meetings offer a great opportunity to get teams together for practical communication and teambuilding.

The future for specialist venues – Corporate Centres of Leadership Excellence

Venues are big assets to have standing idle and it is no surprise that venues are looking to cover fixed overheads by taking weekend business and non-core business during quieter times. But the message is that they have become skilled at managing both to achieve successful outcomes whoever the customer might be.

Debate amongst the group developed relating to whether conference centres are likely to become dedicated learning environments by offering a full service, including providing the trainers, content and fully accredited courses?
Both Wyboston Lakes and Missenden Abbey believe this works extremely well and are independently working this into their business model.

Eva Neupauer-Jones, General Manager of Missenden Abbey commented “Adult learners don’t want to be in a student environment. Dedicated venues suit adult needs, providing exceptional facilities and standards of learning.”

Eva Neupauer-Jones and Paul Colston
The academy partnerships also open conversations with decision makers for other training and business events, and provide opportunities across other avenues of the business.

Tailored customisation and raising industry standards

Examining the challenges of maintaining high quality standards, along with rate demands, Mark Jones reflected “Venues who maintain relationships with their customers will know what they want, and will be able to raise standards in accordance. Let’s call it ‘Tailored customisation’ - providing the wow factor and getting inside the customers head. It’s a combination of using industry best practice, whilst also offering a little something extra.”

There was a word of caution however: “Demands of business customers are growing all the time,” said Mark “but we must be careful not to de-value what we offer by reducing rates just to secure business – this is a difficult balance at present.”

There was also a view that sometimes it is better to lose a customer to a competitor for a rate that is un-sustainable in the long term, as the chances are that the customer experience will not live up to expectations and the client will return to reap the benefits of quality standards.

Specialist staff and the customer experience

When discussing what makes the customer experience rate above the industry average at Conference Centres of Excellence venues, it became clear that professional and dedicated staff are crucial.

“Empowering staff to allow flexibility and decision making, makes successful events” stated Eva Neupauer-Jones “The ability of the team to adapt during events or for different customer requirements is vital, and this is where specialist staff and quality venues come together to form a productive environment.”

An influx of new venues

Ben Aylward, Managing Director of Myvenues.co.uk raised the issue of new, diverse venues opening every day, including airports, arenas, theatres and asked how established venues can overcome this?

“It’s an unavoidable situation that we cannot, nor should we try to, overcome, but the reality is that not all venues will be successful” responded Anthony Lishman, Executive Director of Conference Centres of Excellence.  “It is incredibly hard to run a successful quality venue and some new businesses will fail. However, as business and the economy improves, empty spaces will be reclaimed for day to day business use and the balance will return.”

Displaying an excellent example of established, award winning venues, The Manor House provided an ideal setting for the event, offering editors an opportunity to experience the consistently high standards provided at Conference Centres of Excellence venues.

Ben Aylward of Myvenues.co.uk remarked on the welcoming atmosphere and professional approach and summarised that as a successful event venue the Manor House has “everything is in its place and as you expect it”.

The Manor House wins two awards in a week.

The Manor House Conference Centre, Godalming, has won two prestigious awards in the very first week of 2013.

The first is a VisitEngland Silver Award, which followed from the property’s first star rating assessment, at which it achieved a four star rating. The Silver Award is an additional award, given in recognition of exceptional quality within a property’s star rating or for outperforming a star rating.

Under the rating scheme, the Manor House had to be assessed by an independent inspector, who stayed incognito overnight. This enabled the inspector to rate his stay against rigorous criteria, set nationally. These included not only the Manor House's physical aspects, but also levels of service, hospitality and comfort. The better these are, generally, the higher the star rating.

In the same week, The Manor House also received a VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation from BDRC Continental, who collect feedback to measure how likely the Manor House’s meetings customers are to recommend it. Of the nearly 400 hotels and venues nationally who took part in the scheme in 2012, only 26 got the net promoter score of +70 or more necessary to win the Gold Standard Accreditation. The Manor House is the only venue to win in the Surrey area.

“We're delighted to win the Visit England Silver Award and VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation and get a 4 star rating all in one week – it’s a great start to 2013!”  says Centre Manager Howard Canning, “for customers, the 4 star rating is a real indication of quality and hospitality, whilst the Gold Standard Accreditation is an indication that many others are happy to recommend the Manor House’s meetings facilities and services.”

An atmospheric venue, professional staff and excellent facilities combine at The Manor House to create a unique business environment.

Eleven meeting rooms range from the small and intimate to airy and spacious, each with its own character and fully equipped. The tranquil setting offers fabulous views across the surrounding countryside yet The Manor House is very accessible, just 12 miles from M25 (junc 10, A3), 45 minutes from London Waterloo by train and under an hour from Heathrow and Gatwick.

Breakfast Meetings at The Manor House

Meetings work better out of the office, away from distractions like the ringing phone, pinging e mails and colleagues asking if they can “just have a word”. Yet getting a few people away for even a few hours is not made any easier by the pressures on time we all face, let alone any budgetary constraints.

Building a meeting around a meal at the Manor House Conference Centre near Guildford could be the answer. Breakfast meetings, in particular, are making a comeback and with a bit of planning they can offer so much more than the traditional pre-meeting fare of a limp sausage in a soggy bun with a cup of lukewarm coffee.

Breakfast meetings offer all sorts of advantages to Surrey businessmen. Not only is the cost reasonable compared to a traditional meeting, but a short meeting with colleagues before the start of the business day leaves office hours free to do the day job.

So what are the options? Firstly, you should consider how you want to meet. If privacy is important, you may want to think about hiring one of the Manor House’s private rooms, such as the Boardroom. If it is less of a concern, then a meeting in the main dining room may offer the easiest and most cost-effective solution.

Choosing what’s to eat is also important. If you are only a few people, you could start the day with a traditional full English breakfast. Some venues will cook everything to order, meaning you get your breakfast freshly cooked for you. Other venues prefer a hot buffet which , whilst offering plenty of choice, can have the disadvantage of looking unappetising if there is not a quick turnover of food or if it is not topped up often, as happens if service is slow or coming to an end.

The Manor House fall in to the former category, cooking everything to order, so when you want to eat, your breakfast is as fresh as fresh can be.

The Manor House also uses local ingredients & suppliers, so when you order a Manor House Surrey breakfast, that's exactly what you get, complete with organic eggs and sausages made a couple of miles away.

Of course, The Manor House also caters for those who prefer something lighter - how about pancakes and maple syrup or muesli made to the Manor House’s own recipe?

If your group is larger and networking is important, you may want to consider a breakfast finger buffet. This could incorporate traditional items such as pastries, as well as items like mini smoked salmon bagels and mini brioche with Parma ham. Of course, larger groups may also want to sit down and enjoy “the full monty”, perhaps to the accompaniment of an inspirational speaker.

There are lots of possibilities and we’re here to help. If you’d like to discuss some ideas, please contact the Hotline today on 0845 230 1414 or info@cceonline.co.uk

The Manor House completes latest refurbishment

The Manor House conference centre and hotel near Guildford, Surrey has completed the refurbishment of the smallest room in the house, the gents' toilets.

The Manor House is already accredited with a gold award by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), the national sustainable tourism scheme for the UK. Although this refurbishment is only a small project, the conference centre's manager, Howard Canning, hopes that it will increase the Manor House's green credentials by reducing water and electricity consumption.

Waterless urinals have been installed, which according to Canning will reduce the conference centre's water usage by an estimated 66000 litres annually. "As we're expecting a drought this summer in Surrey, that's a small, but vital saving" he says.

The toilets are lit with new LED bulbs which, as well as giving much better lighting, use 50% less electricity than the previous lighting system. An efficient Airblade hand drier will altogether remove the need for expensive paper towels, "money" says Canning, "that goes straight in the bin."

The refurbishment has been done by the conference centre's Facilities Manager, Jeyson Fosbury, who has been keen to minimise the environmental impact of the work. "We were going to buy new doors" he says "but thought we'd try stripping the old doors down first." He was delighted and amazed to discover they were original solid oak doors from the 1920's." Naturally, these doors have been re-instated they will finish the job off to a tee
