Electric car spaces helping keep the Beardmore clean and green

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre continued their dedication to providing green tourism and conference solutions today, by installing a new electric car charging point and parking spaces for guests and visitors.

The state of the art Chargemaster Charging Unit, installed by Everwarm allows for two cars to be charged by guests and visitors to the award winning Clydebank hotel. 

Beardmore Hotel Manager Gary Rice commented: “As a Conference Centre of Excellence and holder of the Gold award for Green Tourism, it is essential that we continue to grow and improve to meet the needs and wants of our guests and conference users. 

“As the environmental and financial benefits of owning an electric car become more apparent, it was crucial for us to adapt and ensure that this facility was available to everyone who comes to the Beardmore. 

“We take great pride in our Green Conference Package, which encourages organisers to hold sustainable events and the addition of these parking bays was a vital element to the ongoing success this programme. 

“We have a very strong commitment to providing environmentally friendly and sustainable services. Our Green Team, with a representative from every department, works tirelessly all year round to come up with new and innovative ways to improve our eco-friendly status and this is the first of what will be many new ideas in 2014.”

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre has been awarded the acclaimed Gold Award for Green Tourism by the Green Tourism Business Scheme three years in a row and is committed to the fundamentals of sustainable eco-friendly practices. Henley Conferences at Greenlands is committed to achieving the highest standards of environmental performance, preventing pollution and minimising the impact of its operations. Not content with resting on our laurels, Henley has continued to implement numerous systems to improve the sustainability of the business and whilst segregating waste for recycling has been common practice for several years, its team have now gone one step further to divert many tonnes of waste away from landfill, by harnessing the power of the mighty worm! Working alongside Kompost, Henley Conferences at Greenlands have introduced several specially created composting bins to their waste and recycling collection point. These bins are filled with food waste, tea leaves, coffee grounds and other vegetable matter and then play host to a colony of busy earthworms, who munch their way through this wonderful banquet and in their wake leave a superb organic compost, that then goes back onto the gardens of the estate to bolster productivity.

Greenlands is also fortunate to be situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a unique riverside environment and it is our policy to work to conserve these natural habitats and create additional areas of wildlife value wherever possible. River banks have been reinforced with an environmental solution to river bank engineering and allowed the creation of wetland scrapes to encourage wildlife habitat and there is also a wild meadow area containing many specimens of local flora and encouraging insect and mammal activity.

The venue has an ongoing programme of tree planting to add to our arboretum, using planting, felling and conservation methods to create additional wildlife habitats where possible.

Whilst all businesses recognize the need for some face-to-face meetings, when participants are some distance apart this normally requires most parties to travel to a remote location and forsake a great deal of time to that travelling. Most forms of transport today still rely heavily on fossil fuel thereby creating emissions of carbon dioxide and pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. Fresh Produce at Lane End Conference Centre

As part of our commitment to source local home grown produce and only use suppliers who have a sound environmental policy in place, we are now sourcing all our milk directly from the Lacey family who have been farming in South Bucks, with pedigree Guernsey cows for seven generations since the 1930’s.

The milk is not only fresh and tasty, but there is no food miles at all as the farm is located within 2 miles of Lane End Conference Centre. The Lacey family have invested in equipment to enable them to pasteurise their own milk which have not only presented us with the opportunity to reduce our food miles significantly, but we are now also supplying a fresher and healthier product as Guernsey milk is recognised for its additional health benefits.

Guernsey milk is unhomogenised and better for your health. Although homogenisation breaks up the fat particles which means the milk will stay fresher for longer, it also causes the fat to be absorbed much more easily into the body and is therefore not good for you.

New online nature diary for eco-venue Cotswold Conference Centre, Midlands

Cotswold Conference Centre has launched a new online nature diary to capture information and photographs of some of the wildlife found on the privately owned Estate.

The Estate covers over 300 acres of Cotswold AONB parkland and is situated on the escarpment overlooking Willersey, Broadway and Evesham Vale. The grounds take in countryside from both Worcestershire and Gloucestershire and sections of The Cotswold Way.

CCC is particularly known for its green training initiatives and the online diary was suggested by Estate employee Kerry Jones. Kerry is a keen member of CCC’s ‘Green Team’ and has worked on the Estate since 2003.

“As I spend much of my time out and about on the Estate I see so much of the wildlife and how our landscape changes through the seasons. Over the years, guests and delegates that visit often comment on how much they enjoy seeing badgers, foxes and deer, so I just thought it would be a good idea to start a diary for all of us to capture the flora and fauna and share the information through writing and pictures. Some delegates from Natural England were here on a conference last week and have helped get the diary started with their expert knowledge”.

In my experience our members have always had good housekeeping policies which have developed into environmental and ecological good practice whether it is saving energy by turning the lights off to the investment in more significant projects such as Bio-Mass generators.

 

Examples are provided here of some of our venues initiatives, as we seek to provide a greener environment in which you can conduct your meetings, training and other events in.

Wellcome Trust Conference Centre, Cambridgeshire

The centre’s Grade 2 listed Hinxton Hall has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation -- the British Standard that shows compliance with a strict set of environmental standards. Staff have been instrumental in setting up many ‘green’ initiatives, including growing their own fresh herbs to serve in the restaurant, and introducing consistent recycling policies whereby waste is used for compost.
