Nottingham Conference Centre achieves leading industry accreditation

Nottingham Conference Centre has recently received the Accredited in Meetings (AIM) Gold standard award. AIM is the nationwide 'kitemark' for venues and service providers in the meetings, conference and events industry.

Administered by the meetings industry association (mia) and endorsed by Visit Britain, Visit England and the Association of British Professional Conference Organisers, AIM is awarded to venues that have met or exceeded 50 criteria including customer service, quality of facilities, compliance with codes of conduct and corporate social responsibility.

AIM Gold is the highest level of the accreditation and demonstrates a venue’s compliance with a more stringent set of criteria, completing a self-assessment, producing a portfolio of evidence in support of its application and receiving a visit from an independent assessor.

Jennifer Canto, Nottingham Conference Centre business development and sales manager, said: “We believe this is an important accreditation within the industry, showing customers the level of standards we are operating at.

“As an AIM accredited supplier we are committed to making our clients’ events a success and by using our expertise we strive to exceed the highest standards.”

Jane Longhurst, mia chief executive, added: “AIM is a mark of reassurance to meetings buyers; a demonstration that a venue is compliant, competent and capable. When a venue has achieved AIM Gold, buyers know the facilities will be of the highest standard and that they will receive service that is second to none with exceptional catering and hospitality.”

Nottingham Conference Centre tops industry survey

Nottingham Conference Centre has come top in an industry survey from academic venue consortium Venuemasters.

Designed to provide a benchmark of service and response levels, the survey was conducted with 89 Venuemasters members and a sample of ten hotels and conference centres in January. It saw ‘mystery buyer’ researchers contact the venues with details of an event they were planning to hold which were then rated against a checklist of actions a buyer should expect .

Venues were scored in four categories - each representing a different element of the enquiry handling process, from the initial contact to following up the enquiry. Nottingham Conference Centre scored top marks in two of the categories and were rated very highly in the rest.

The feedback enables members to measure their performance against others, to identify aspects of the venue’s enquiry handling process that have performed well or could be improved, and to help build service levels that demonstrate the professionalism the academic venue provide to potential buyers.

Jillian Miles, conference and events operations manager at Nottingham Conference Centre, commented: “We pride ourselves in the excellent level of service we offer, and it is great to have the work our team does recognised in this way. This is only the second time that we’ve been involved in the survey and we’re delighted to have come first this year, and will continue to provide our customers with the exceptional service levels they have come to expect from us.”

Venuemasters is a consortium promoting the facilities available for hire to event planners and other customers at 90 academic venues in the UK and Ireland.

Bollywood blockbuster filmed at The University of Nottingham

A spectacular, time-travelling Bollywood movie is being filmed this month at The University of Nottingham with the historic buildings of University Park and the ultra-modern Jubilee campus as its backdrop.

The film is called Teri Meri Kahani and is being directed by rising Indian star director Kunal Kholi.

It’s the story of a couple who embark on a romantic journey of eternal love through different lives that start in contemporary London and Nottingham, go back in time to the Punjab of 1910 and forward to 1960s Bombay.

Bollywood superstars Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor play the lead roles, Krish and Radha, two young people who find themselves destined to be together no matter what the era, location or circumstances of their multiple and varied lives.

Filming has already taken place in India and in London and Stratford-upon-Avon. Currently the cast and crew are working at numerous locations around the University including large open-air dance sequences involving 100 dancers on the campus parkland, as well as interior scenes in lecture theatres, cafes, the Hallward library and halls of residence.

Cyrus Patel, UK Line Producer for the project said: 'It’s been a wonderful opportunity to film at one of the most prestigious and picturesque universities in the UK. The staff have been brilliant to work with and have ensured our shoot has run smoothly from start to finish.

'The actors, directors, producers and crew have had a great experience filming here and I would recommend this as a very cinematic location for all future films coming to the UK.'

Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at The University of Nottingham, Chris Jagger said: 'Helping a Bollywood cast and crew deliver a large scale movie like this has been something out of the ordinary, but also a very enjoyable and rewarding challenge for the University’s dedicated conference office team.

'They have done a tremendous job juggling the required filming logistics, people movements and updated daily schedules around both University Park and Jubilee Campus with the minimum of disruption or inconvenience to normal university campus activity.

'I am sure that everyone involved will be eagerly awaiting seeing the finished result.'

Teri Meri Kahani will be released in India early next Spring with a worldwide distribution of the film shortly afterwards.

Latest news: £20m eco-friendly hotel for University of Nottingham

Construction is due to start on a new 200-bed upmarket hotel at The University of Nottingham.

With planning permission already in place, the University’s Council have now given approval for the £20m eco-friendly hotel, which will be built on University Park, adjacent to the East Midlands Conference Centre. The hotel, which will be funded entirely by the University, will be available for use by conference delegates, university visitors, local businesses and the general public.

Contractors BAM Construction have been appointed to start work on site during July. BAM Construction is a top 10 national contractor with extensive experience in building both education and hotel facilities. The hotel is due to be completed for opening by the end of 2012.

Built to the highest environmental standards, the hotel will feature state-of-the-art technology to reduce carbon emissions, as part of the University’s strategy to become an ever more environmentally-friendly institution. It will feature some executive-style rooms, meeting and conferencing rooms, a gym as well as a restaurant and bar.

Architects and interior designers have developed the eco-friendly building featuring accessible rooftop terraces, green roofs and maximum use of natural daylight. Open spaces will provide superb views of The University of Nottingham’s extensively landscaped campus, whilst the latest technology will help to reduce carbon emissions.

Solar photovoltaic panels and ground-sourced heat technology are incorporated, as well as a lower energy assisted-cooling ventilation system.

The hotel will aim to achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), which recognises low-impact buildings that incorporate the best environmental practice. The University of Nottingham has developed a series of award-winning buildings that have underlined its commitment to sustainable architecture and construction.

Chris Jagger, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer for The University of Nottingham said “The hotel will enhance the existing range of conference facilities provided by the University. It will provide a source of excellent quality accommodation all year round, not only supporting the existing meeting spaces provided by the award-winning East Midlands Conference Centre, but also for visitors to the University.”

Conference news: New hotel at The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham has announced plans to develop a 200-bed, 4 star equivalent hotel on its main University Park campus. The eco-friendly hotel will be sited next to the East Midlands Conference Centre and will feature at least 50 executive-style rooms, four boardrooms and a gym as well as a restaurant and bar which will be open to the public.

Building work is expected to commence in 2011, with completion due autumn 2012. Funded by The University of Nottingham, the new hotel will complement the existing facilities provided by the EMCC, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2010. It will also provide a much needed resource for visitors to the University.

The £20 million project has already appointed architects and interior designers to develop an eco-friendly building. The design of the hotel will feature external walk able rooftop gardens and terraces with maximum use of natural day light. Open spaces will provide superb views of The University of Nottingham’s extensively landscaped campus, whilst using state-of-the-art technology will reduce carbon emissions. Solar photovoltaic panels and an air-sourced heat pump are under consideration, as well as a new assisted-cooling ventilation system to allow temperatures to be client-controlled.

As a minimum, the hotel will aim to achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) which recognises low impact buildings that incorporate the best environmental practice. The University of Nottingham has developed a series of award-winning buildings that have underlined its commitment to sustainable architecture and construction.

Professor David Greenaway, Vice Chancellor of The University of Nottingham commented ‘The key aspect of the proposed design of the hotel is how well it nestles into the surrounding orchard hillside landscape and its environmental sustainability credentials.

Although the hotel will complement the hugely successful EMCC, it will generate income in its own right, providing accommodation for the general public, local businesses and University visitors. I am sure that the hotel will prove to be a valuable asset for the future development of the University and further enhance the University’s important contribution to the city of Nottingham.’

School Children Show Design Flair for East Midlands Conference Centre

115 pupils from Dovecote Primary, Whitegate Primary and Milford Primary schools in Clifton, Nottingham visited the East Midlands Conference Centre on Tuesday 25th May to find out the winner of a competition to design a new logo to commemorate the conference centre's 25th Anniversary. The logos were designed by groups of year 5 children, following briefing sessions led by the Nottingham Conferences' marketing team in the schools in February this year.

‘Keiths Team' from Whitegate Primary School were delighted to accept the winners accolade for their design and will now join the marketing team to develop it further. The team comprising Keith Wong, Zoellise Nicholson, Olivia Anderson-Rayner, Ryan O'Malley and Shauna Bales were presented with a framed version of the logo and certificate from Chris Jagger, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at The University of Nottingham. The new logo will be used on the website and on other promotional materials on the lead up to the official celebrations in November this year.

The judging panel; Lisa Owen, Primary Schools Engagement Manager, Community Partnerships, The University of Nottingham, Kirstie Danzey, Marketing Manager, Nottingham Conferences and Colin Zachara, Operations Manager, The East Midlands Conference Centre, assessed the entries according to the brief that had been set.

Colin said "We were astounded by the number and quality of the entries and there has obviously been a lot of time and effort put into this project. The winning design has been clearly thought through with great use of the existing brand colours and we felt that it really captures the spirit of celebrating 25 years of business at the East Midlands Conference Centre."

Leading the project, Kirstie Danzey Marketing Manager for Nottingham Conferences explains; "The East Midlands Conference Centre has played host to a number of events in 25 years, with all profits going back into the University, as well as bringing a significant direct economic benefit into Nottingham. We are delighted with the winning design which is bright and uplifting and we look forward to developing it and using it on marketing materials later in the year"
