National Meetings Week 2010
National Meetings Week (NMW) is an annual awareness week which aims to raise the profile of the UK meetings and events industry to the wider business market across the UK. Every year NMW focuses on the £22 billion-a-year contribution which meetings and events make to the UK economy, the 1.78 million jobs supported, the importance of delegate care, and the positive benefits which effective meetings bring to business communications and motivation. For 2010 NMW will be taking place 18-22 October.
One of the key mouthpieces for the UK meetings industry is National Meetings Week, a VisitBritain led campaign and one that has steadily grown into one of the clearest examples of the UK meetings industry promoting itself. For this reason, VisitBritain is once again encouraging support for National Meetings Week. For more information visit http://www.keepbritaintalking.co.uk/

Sales boost proves Event Organisers are returning to Specialist Venues
In its business year ending in May, sales generated by Conference Centres of Excellence were more than 50% up on the previous year. The group – the UK’s leading sales and marketing consortium of specialist meetings venues – says that growth is being significantly driven by event organisers who, having tried non-specialist venues during the recession, have come to realise that dedicated facilities and services are the best option.
The consortium’s dedicated Hotline sales team develops business opportunities to complement the activities of its individual member venues. The team was established in the spring of last year when Conference Centres of Excellence decided to create an in-house sales activity, after many years of taking a service from an external provider.
The group currently has 36 member venues spread across the UK, all of which have had to meet stringent standards of facility and service quality before being accepted into membership. All provide a specific focus on conferences and meetings, without the distractions faced by non-specialist venues and their customers.
“Our own sales team, and many of our individual members, are regularly hearing from organisers who’ve found that apparently cheaper options from non-specialist providers necessitate unacceptable compromise,” explains Anthony Lishman, the consortium’s Executive Director: “Their experience seems to be that most, if not all, superficially attractive deals have meant service deficiencies and poor outcomes for the organiser.”
Conference Centres of Excellence believes that another factor working in favour of dedicated conference provision is the sensitivity of organisers to accusations of waste or extravagance. “Focused conference environments help organisers to demonstrate that they have the right priorities,” said Anthony Lishman: “They care for the delegate without lavishness, and of course they have facilities dedicated to ensuring that the message is effectively delivered.”
“Organisers have become even more sophisticated in assessing what they really need from a venue,” added Anthony: “They’re looking for a genuinely focused environment, so that the communications process is sharp, concentrated and efficient; one that understands the challenge of managing a successful event, is responsive to late change and adjusts with the minimum of fuss; and that has everything that’s needed on site in terms of technical support.”
The Conference Centres of Excellence Hotline team provides a free, focused venue-finding service for corporate clients and agencies, providing single-source guidance on facilities, availability and rates for each member venue. It can be contacted on 0845 230 1414, email info@cceonline.co.uk. The consortium’s website www.cceonline.co.uk includes extensive information on all members.

Multi-million pound boost for Warwick Conferences
Warwick Conferences, has just announced that all three of its training and conference centres are set to benefit from a multi-million pound rolling refurbishment programme, starting this September.
The £2.6 million investment is indicative of Warwick Conferences’ continual quest to provide the best facilities and experience for the 200,000 delegates visiting the venues each year.
This latest round of works will see updates to residential, communal and conference areas around the estate, and will be completed by March 2012.
Alan Robinson, director of training and conference centres comments: “The rolling refurbishment programme reflects our commitment at Warwick Conferences to continually improve the facilities we have to offer. This is a significant multi-million pound investment and adds to the £7.9 million spent on refurbishments and upgrades to our facilities last year.
“The updates across the training and conference centres have been specifically designed to ensure that all of our delegates, including residential guests, are guaranteed to enjoy the best possible service and the latest in modern facilities, all within a comfortable environment.
“To make certain that we’re meeting the requirements and satisfaction of all of our guests, feedback from delegates has been taken on board and incorporated into the refurbishment plans.”
Scarman training and conference centre is set to benefit from a full bedroom refurbishment of all of its 204 bedrooms including redecoration, new furniture and a 22inch flat screen television in each room. Warwick Conferences has agreed on the final specification of the bedrooms following the introduction of four trial rooms at Scarman and collating customer comments before agreeing the final design. Works to the front entrance, reception, exercise and case study rooms are also planned.
Responding to delegates’ comments at Arden, new larger beds have been ordered to ensure that residential visitors get a great night’s sleep. Other transformations at Arden include newly decorated corridors, new lounge furniture, improvements to internal signage and a redecorated private dining room.
Radcliffe will receive refurbishment to the front and rear bar areas, its reception, further improvements to its bedrooms and extensive works in all lecture rooms.
