Quality Standards remain top of the list for CCE Venues

Conference Centres of Excellence is delighted once again to see member venues achieve a number of BDRC Continental’s VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditations at the end of Q1 2015.
The VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation is the top level accolade issued to venues, based on independent customer feedback including their ‘likelihood to recommend’ Net Promoter Score.

Our venues consistently demonstrate the high standards required to provide an outstanding event experience for customers, across a number of key areas including service, facilities, food and accommodation. For those who take part in the BDRC VenueVerdict programme, achieving these accreditations on a regular basis independently confirms the excellent ongoing service delivery.
Just under 21,000 individual pieces of feedback were collated to determine the VenueVerdict results, providing a completely independent assessment of experience. In choosing a venue where customer feedback and in particular the ‘likelihood to recommend’ has been measured in this way, customers can rest assured that they are in safe hands.

Seven Conference Centres of Excellence member venues have achieved the BDRC Continental VenueVerdict Gold Standard Accreditation following ongoing assessment of customer feedback during the year from April 2014 to March 2015.

The Conference Centre of Excellence gold accredited venues are:

Amanda Stacey, Marketing Manager of Conference Centres of Excellence commented:
“At a time when service delivery and customer experience are once again becoming a priority factor for event bookers, rather than low pricing and reduced rate packages, we’re delighted to see that our members are consistently being rewarded with the highest level of customer feedback. BDRC VenueVerdict is a well-recognised industry standard and our venues can rightly be proud of their achievements.”

The Møller Centre unveils impressively planned extension

Twenty two years after its original construction, the Møller Centre’s latest project is an impressively planned extension. Jude Clarke of the Cambridge News spoke with general manager Stuart Websdale about the iconic building:

“When we do things we do them well: we don’t do half measures.” So said Stuart Websdale, general manager of theMøller Centre when we spoke recently about the centre’s exciting new building project. And the more he explained about the centre’s unique approach, the more apparent this became.

Originally built in 1992, the centre, an internationally renowned leadership development, meeting and conference centre, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Churchill College. The iconic original building, constructed with a generous donation by the Danish AP Møller & Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, was purpose-designed for training and took the form of a ship, the lecture theatre representing its bridge and the east end of the accommodation block its bow.

Since then, the centre and its services have thrived, winning awards including the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade for outstanding achievement in the delivery of its bespoke international Executive Education programmes, and many customer service and conferencing awards. The centre is also home to Møller PSF Group, one of the leading consultants to professional services firms.

Hosting on average 15 events a week in its meeting rooms, 80 per cent of which are residential, and now employing over 100 experienced members of staff, the decision was taken, driven by the ever-growing demand for their style of learning provision and facilities, to expand the bedrooms, as well as office and catering space.

As Stuart explains, however: “Because of the iconic architecture and location on the beautiful grounds of Churchill College, a straightforward building extension was not an option.” Careful planning, combined with thoughtful consultation and engagement with the wide range of stakeholders was essential. With Stuart managing the project, a phased approach was implemented, ensuring that the centre could continue with “business as usual” throughout the build, with minimal impact on client events, neighbours and the rest of the college.

Another key aspect of the project was the determination to use the right consultants and suppliers. Wherever possible, local expertise has been involved so that – as Stuart puts it – “we weren’t bringing in lots of external resource that didn’t understand Cambridge and the values of The Møller
Centre. We wanted consultants on our doorstep”.

Keeping the extension very much in the spirit of the original 1992 build, a member of the original internationally acclaimed architectural firm – Henning Larsen, in Denmark – was engaged to develop the concept before the project was handed across to the Cambridge design team.

“Remarkably we have also been fortunate enough to work with several people from the original build team including a member of Cambridge Council building control, a member of the local roofing firm who installed the original copper roofing and our trusted furniture supplier who provided the original batch of iconic Hans Wegner chairs, tables and light fittings.”

One small detail that perhaps encapsulates the impressive care and attention to detail exhibited across the whole of this project is that of the hoardings. A few eyes were initially raised when the boards, erected to screen off the construction areas, were painted a vivid green. Drive along Madingley Road, however, and the reason soon becomes very clear. Situated as they are on such a verdant site – surrounded by the lawns and trees of Churchill College – it’s a successful and sympathetic camouflage, minimising any visual impact on the area.

And with the project on track for completion by its scheduled deadline in March, what new facilities will the extended centre be able to provide? As well as an additional 21 luxury bedrooms, all with a specification comparable to a four-star hotel, there will be a new training and refreshments area, with original meeting rooms re-modelled and doubled in size, a spacious landscaped patio, one of Cambridge’s most advanced kitchens and a brand new reception lounge. As well as the enlarged office space, the outdoor areas have been extensively landscaped as well. Such care has been taken to maximise outdoor space that the official Grand Launch has been planned for June, when the longer daylight hours will show off this impressive new addition in all its glory.

It certainly is an impressively thought-out project, and one that, ultimately, reflects the thoroughness, professional approach and the importance that has always been placed on the twin pillars of customer service and quality by The Møller Centre over the last 22 years.

Møller Centre builds for growth

The Møller Centre has been granted planning permission by Cambridge City Council to expand their premises at Churchill College, Cambridge, which will support the growing demand for its residential meeting facilities and executive education programmes.

Having completed a pre planning and formal planning application, and consulted local residents and the collegiate community, The Møller Centre’s modest extension to its main building will provide an additional 21 bedrooms, increased catering space and enlarged state of the art meeting and office space.  The project has been phased over a period of months to ensure that the Centre can continue with “business as usual” throughout the build.

“The extension intentionally compliments the original building design” says Stuart Websdale, General Manager of The Møller Centre. “On completion, the new facilities will blend effortlessly into the original building using precise design detail and matching materials.  The commitment to detail has meant ongoing consultation with members of the original Henning Larsen Architectural practice in Denmark. The benefits to clients will be vast, providing greater flexibility, increased variety in training room sizes and additional capacity for our loyal client base. The build will enhance The Møller Centre’s commitment to sourcing high quality, environmentally friendly and sustainable materials.  We are delighted to be using local contractors and suppliers to help support the regional economy.   Meticulous planning and collaboration with various stakeholders will ensure that the construction goes smoothly, allowing us to continue our focus on our customers.”

The Møller Centre was established in 1992 after a generous donation by the A.P Møller & Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, a Danish institution that makes contributions to good causes, especially those involving national heritage, shipping, industry, education and science. Mr. Møller envisaged The Møller Centre to be a “Centre of Excellence” - bringing together the worlds of academia and industry.

Today, The Møller Centre is a very successful business that employs over 100 skilled and motivated staff working exclusively in the fields of Management Training, Customised Executive Education and Conferencing. Conducted in bespoke, state of the art facilities, this very pure learning environment is also appealing to international delegations.  All profits from the Centre are then donated to Churchill College for educational support.

The Møller Centre build project will start in December 2013, with a view to opening the new facilities in the spring of 2015. To follow the project’s progress, please follow #mollerbuild

New Year, New Look at Møller Centre

There is a new look in the iconic Danish designed Møller Centre

Located in their Study Centre, artist, Albert Irvin RA, in collaboration with his gallery Gimpel Fils, has generously loaned a selection of his paintings and prints to be viewed by clients and guests.

Albert Irvin RA is one of the UK’s most exuberant, colourful and widely-respected British artists. Now aged 90, Irvin began his artistic career at Northampton School of Art from 1940 to 1941, and taught at Goldsmiths College of Art, London for many years. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1998 and continues to live and work in London.

At first, Irvin’s work was figurative, painting subjects that he knew at first hand, such as people in domestic surroundings and portraits: the figure gradually disappeared and gave way to a new abstract language. Increasing the scale and moving away from naturalistic colour, Irvin conceived the picture space metaphorically as a terrain with affinities both to London street maps and to landscape. Thereafter he developed an interest in greater spatial complexity. His subsequent work is a collage of gestural strokes, symbols and cross-hatching in lively, chromatically intense compositions.

“This is a new way of supporting the local community by using the facilities we have as a gallery for such an internationally renowned artist” comments Christine Hartshorne, Marketing Manager at The Møller Centre. “Design is of key strategic importance to The Møller Centre as the facilities has been designed to inspire collaborative creative thinking. Irvin’s work helps to extend this aspiration, and his abstract and colourful pieces provide a new experience to our clients and guests to enhance creative thinking. All of Irvin’s artworks on display are for sale through Gimpel Fils, London.”

The Møller Centre is located at Churchill College, University of Cambridge and is one of the UK’s Conference Centres of Excellence

With a business strategy of high level service and quality, and getting it right first time for the client, The Møller Centre has built a successful business that clients trust.

CCE awards highlight outstanding performance of member venues and external providers

Conference Centres of Excellence has announced the winners of its first-ever awards. Presented at the consortium’s recent annual conference at the Wyboston Lakes Executive Centre, the awards recognise excellence from within the CCE membership, and also  in three categories for non-members - ‘best supplier’, ‘best booking agency’, and ‘non-CCE venue most admired by members’.

Submissions were invited from all members of the consortium, which is the UK’s leading group of specialist conference and training venues and has thirty six members. The judging panel comprised industry experts Tony Rogers, Anna Clover and Tim Chudley, and was chaired by CCE executive director Anthony Lishman.

Awards involving member venues were as follows:

The Innovation Award was won by Warwick Conferences’ Scarman House for its ‘comparetheconference.com’ campaign. The judges commented that the initiative  was both very creative and specifically targeted, and “will benefit the whole of our industry by promoting the conference centre concept”. Runner up was Conference Aston for its ‘aston.app’ initiative.

The Sustainability Award was won by Prospero House. The panel described its actions as “taking sustainability and CSR policy to the next level, with a big community aspect.”

The Best Non-Residential Venue Award went to Nottingham Conference Centre. Judges complimented the venue on its “creative use of an old building”, the focus of its SOPs and the quality of its customer feedback. Runner up was Maple House.

The Best Residential Venue Award went to The  Møller Centre. Judges complimented the venue on its regular customer focus groups, and the  excellence of its website. They also referred to the venue’s consistent achievement of gold standard in the BDRC VenueVerdict awards. Runner up was Scarman House.

Three other categories allowed CCE member venues to express their opinions on third-party organisations which were themselves not part of the consortium.  In the case of ‘Best Supplier’ and ‘Best Booking Agency’, the only requirement was that nominated companies must have an ongoing relationship with one or more CCE members. In the case of the ‘non-CCE venue most admired by members’, submissions were open to interpretation, and could be for service, quality, innovation.  The winners were as follows:

The Best Supplier to Conferencing award went to Berkmann Wine Cellars, which were described as “going above and beyond” and “adding value”. Runner-up was Wilson Vale.

“Our awards achieve a number of primary objectives, one of which is to help enhance awareness of the role and purpose of dedicated venues and their continuing commitment to progressive enhancement of their services,” commented Anthony Lishman: “ They also help to strengthen still further the competitiveness of member venues, which must be good for their customers – and they also enable members to give a pat on the back to  organisations that are impressing them.”

“The Møller Centre takes its corporate responsibilities very seriously. This award signifies to our clients the processes and procedures we put in place to deliver the most environmentally friendly service we can to our clients”, says Christine Hartshorne, Marketing Manager at The Møller Centre. “This we know is very important to many clients who now look for environmental credentials in suppliers and working partners as a sign of responsibility to the community and aligns with their own business objectives. We are pleased that we can work with our clients to offer a greener more efficient service.”

The many recent initiatives introduced at The Møller Centre to support its environmental policy include updating departmental procedures, new energy-efficient boilers, an improved co-mingled recycling system and an updated purchasing procedure, ensuring The Møller Centre demands more from its suppliers.
